NTP Servers and Clients

Configure NTP On Windows Server 2012

Configure NTP On Windows Server 2012

Configure NTP on Windows Server 2012 is straightforward process. In a domain environment, PDC emulator takes care of the time synchronization, but we need to configure the PDC emulator to synchronize the time with an external time provider server.

NTP settings can be performed through Command line or through Group policy, but command line is preferred as it is easier and straightforward to configure.

There are several time providers available online that can be use to synchronize our Time Server. NTP.Org pool is the most famous collection of networked computers that volunteer to provide highly accurate time via the Network Time Protocol to clients worldwide. A list of the Simple Network Time Protocol (SNTP) time servers that are available on the Internet provided by Microsoft.

Things to consider:

  • If you are part of a domain, make sure you are configuring NTP on  PDC Emulator.
  • If the NTP Server you are configuring is a Virtual Machine, make sure the time synchronization is disabled with the Host Server.
  • Server should have access to the Public Time Servers (eg 0.pool.ntp.org, 1.pool.ntp.org) on port 123

Configuration:

To configure the NTP settings, login to your PDC Server and open the command prompt as Administrator, then Run the following command:

Net Stop w32time , it will stop the time service on the Server.

Net Stop W32Time

Next, run the following command to configure the settings:

w32tm /config /syncfromflags:manual /manualpeerlist:”0.pool.ntp.org, 1.pool.ntp.org, 2.pool.ntp.org”

Configure NTP On Windows Server 2012

Here 0.pool.ntp.org, 1.pool.ntp.org, 2.pool.ntp.org are the NTP pool servers from NTP.org, you can add more Server by changing the number (0,1,2,3,4,5 etc). We have added 3 Servers for redundancy.

Now make your Server a reliable source for your clients by executing the following command:

w32tm /config /reliable:yes

W32time Reliable

Finally, start the Time Server by running:

Net Start w32time

Net Start W32time

Testing:

We can check the above configuration by running “w32tm /query /configuration”, that will list all the settings we configured previously. By running “w32tm /query /status” we will get the details about last sync time and synchronization source. In case you want to force the synchronization you can simply run “w32tm /resync”, it will initiate the synchronization immediately.

Finally, if you want to clear the NTP configuration and start from scratch, you can do it easily, through the following:

  • Stop the Time Service by running “net stop w32time”
  • Run w32tm /unregister to unregister the NTP settings. ( If you see “Access Denied” error, make sure the Time Service has stopped, wait for few minutes then try again)
  • Run w32tm /register to register the Server and start the configuration again.
