Managing WID Database for WSUS

Managing WID Database for WSUS

Some Microsoft products such as Windows Server Update Service 3.0 and Windows Sharepoint Service 3.0 use Windows Internal Database. Managing this database is a tricky thing. WID Database does not install SQL Server service instance neither it has any management tools to manage the database, therefore there is not straightaway method to manage WID Database. The good news is, you can use Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio to manage the WID Databases.

After installing the SQL Server Management Studio you can connect to the Windows Internal Database by entering the following in the Server Name:

Server 2008

You should use the following to connect to the Windows Internal Database
\\.\pipe\MSSQL$MICROSOFT##SSEE\sql\query

Server 2012

You should use the following to connect to the Windows Internal Database
\\.\pipe\MICROSOFT##WID\tsql\query

SQL Server Management Studio

After you are connected you can manage the Databases, SUSDB for this example as i am trying to Shrink the WSUS Database, but you can manage any WID Database through this procedure.

SQL Server Management Studio SUSDB

Shrink Database shows the current allocated space and available space. Click Ok to start the Shrink process.

SQL Server Management Studio Shrink Database

It will take some time to complete the shrink process depending on the database size.
